CAS is a registered charity supported by its Members and grants from the Arts Council of England, The Henry Moore Foundation, The Arts Council England Lottery Fund, The Scottish Arts Council, Scottish Arts Council Lottery Fund, The Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and The Fine Family Foundation.

Since 1910 CAS has presented over 5000 works of contemporary art to its member museums throughout Britain by artists from Henry Moore, Francis Bacon and David Hockney to Anthony Caro, Damien Hirst and Bridget Riley.

In 1998 the Arts Council Lottery awarded the Contemporary Art Society £2.5 million to set up the Special Collection Scheme which enables 15 museums throughout England to develop interesting and challenging collections of contemporary art and craft over five years. With the support of the Crafts Council and partnership funding from museums, the Contemporary Art Society is working directly with each museum to develop a distinctive collection in response to their historic collections.

CAS also raises funds for its museum purchases by offering advice to companies wishing to develop corporate collections. Using the SCS model, CAS and the Scottish Arts Council are jointly operating a Lottery-funded National Collecting Scheme for Scotland. The aim is to develop a strategic approach to collecting and reach a wide audience through imaginative interpretation and marketing.

CAS organises an annual selling event, ARTfutures. The selections are made from the best works from degree shows and artists themselves to offer an exciting, but affordable selection of contemporary art. CAS encourages individuals to collect contemporary art and enjoy art by living artists. We offer a range of events to our members, including monthly contemporary art tours, visits to private collections and overseas trips.
