The City & Guilds of London Art School is perhaps unique among London's art schools; it has independent, fee-paying status; an unusually high staff:student ratio,; a strong craft base and, located as it is in a fine Georgian terrace in Kennington, its scale is intimate and the atmosphere one of relaxed concentration.
The School is at an interesting stage in its development, having recently gained degree status in both Fine Art and Conservation studies, in addition to its long established Graduateship and Postgraduate Diploma courses. A one year full-time and two years part-time MA Fine Art course has also been validated.
The School is equipped with large purpose-built painting and sculpture studios with north-facing skylights. Conservation and Wood Carving students are located in smaller, more intimate studios located in the terrace and Stone Carving students have their own stone yard and workshop space at the rear of the garden . There is a large drawing studio which is available to all students in the School.
The School has around two hundred students, most of whom are full-time. There is a very high staff-to-student ratio and classes are small - a feature of the School which is unique. This means that all students receive intensive tuition and the individual attention which they would not enjoy in a larger institution. Because the School is on one site, students continually meet with others working in different areas, encouraging the exchange of ideas and debate. The School prides itself on its unique ambience - all staff are also practising artists - and the informal, lively atmosphere and small size combine to create a community of working artists.
