ARTY GREATEST HITS reproduces the best words and pictures from the first 16 issues of Arty, the cutting-edge arts fanzine, as well as 20 new pieces on the theme of ‘Greatest Hits’’. Arty contributors include Damian and Delaine Le Bas, Stella Vine, Alex Michon, Kavel Rafferty, Sarah Doyle, Pat Gilbert, Marcus Oakley, Emi Avora, Cathy Lomax and Paul Murphy.
From the first issue in early 2001 Arty has tracked the ups and downs of the UK art world from a unique perspective: that of the artist. In its 17 issues to date it has reviewed and critiqued the famous, the infamous and the as-yet-to-be-discovered of the UK art scene. Made up exclusively of the drawings and words of over 30 contributor-artists, Arty doesn’t demand that they write like academics, art critics or journalists but simply that they’re true to what it means to each of them to be an artist.
Each issue of Arty takes a single theme (‘Girls’, ‘Boys’, ‘Idols’, ‘Books’, ‘Scandal’, ‘Anarchy’, ‘Film’) and finds meaning in events as diverse as a Tracey Emin opening, the life of Billy Fury, Gilbert and George as the new Royalty or whether there is life after Becks Futures. But it’s not just about the art: the bars of Hoxton get a look in as does ‘James Bond: class warrior’, the Vietnam War and Heat magazine.
The publication ARTY is low budget, has no photos just drawings by the artist/contributors, does not distinguish between artists and writers and thus bypasses that feeling of us and them. It’s a confident publication that knows its audience like any fanzine does and is sharply relevant because it can address what issues it likes.

It does what it says on the tin. Arty is a fanzine written by artists about art – of all shapes and sizes. The latest Arty is ‘The Film Issue’ and includes a series of pieces of writings and drawings inspired by cinema. What’s refreshing is that while most magazines concern themselves only with wh
