Gallery Yujiro occupies the top floor of an industrial building in Bermondsey that overlooks Building One – the derelict biscuit factory where Damien Hirst mounted ‘Modern Medicine’, the show that first drew Charles Saatchi’s attention to the YBAs. Run by artist Dale Adcock (who worked at Sadie Coles) and Andrea Adcock (who was in advertising at Saatchi & Saatchi), the gallery has the status of a CIC, a company that invests 30 per cent of its profits into the community. The beneficiaries will be the graduates given cheap studio space during those two difficult years after college, along with advice from critics and curators.
