Fosterart is pleased to announce the opening of Voice, a solo exhibition of works by Ford Crull, noted American symbolist painter. Mr. Crull has been exhibiting publicly since 1978, and this will be
he artist’s first solo show in London. He shows at Fosterart courtesy of the Howard Scott Gallery in New York City.
Robert C. Morgan, international art critic: "With Ford Crull, we get something special. His paintings remind me of how improvised music comes together, how the notes pile upon one another,
to create a density that is so perfect and eloquent in their sound, yet fully spontaneous."
Mark Johnson, Director, Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts: "Crull draws upon such international modern masters as Redon, Masson, and Kandinsky. He adds historical perspective
and understanding through the assimilation of motifs derived from ancient cultures. In so doing, Crull fashions images that are at once innovative yet traditional, abstract yet textural, layered with
information yet enigmatic.”
Eleanor Heartney, international art critic: “Crull seems interested in spanning the gap
between the aesthetic and the spiritual. Crull, however, offers something else- paintings that convey a genuine sense of mystery and wonder.
Crull is a painter, first and foremost. To that end these works open up and reveal everything about
themselves and about painting, which goes a long way toward defining their content. There are no
easy answers here, but a sustained viewing reveals a universe of possibilities, all of which are valid.
In his use of colours, symbols and sentence fragments to achieve his poetic vision, he retains an affinity with the Symbolist movement of the late 19th century, which used symbolic allusions,
juxtaposed imagery, and vivid colours to represent dreams, ambiguities, and the unconscious mind.
While these influences are visible in his work, this artist's style is authentic and wholly his own.
Steering clear of the changing fashion in contemporary art, Crull has maintained a painter's
sensibility, developing his imagery and becoming more elegant, more sophisticated, and more
mysterious over time. The paintings are like large organisms undulating with smaller elements of life
– a balancing act between gesture, content, and illusion.
The result is a perfect antidote for the visually demanding world we live in. His paintings' ability to
continue to develop and evolve in the viewer’s sensibility is evidenced by his popularity with some of the great public and private collectors of contemporary art in America, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Brooklyn Museum, The High Museum, Dayton Art Institute, Citicorp, Coca Cola, IBM, JP Morgan, Prudential Insurance, Bill and Melinda Gates, and the Stephane Janssen Collection.
