Solo show of new works by British artist Matt Small, featuring an installation in the project room by Elbow-toe.

'THIS IS ENGLAND', is the much-anticipated solo exhibition by the artist Matt Small. The show will feature a variety of works including his signature paintings on found metal and concrete, small original works on paper and previously unseen sculptural work. Amongst many other accolades Matt is a winner of the Villier's David Art Prize (2001) and a BP Portrait Prize nominee (2001). This show is the culmination of several months of hard work by the artist and represents his latest body of artwork.

Varying in their formats, Matt’s new paintings are fractured and layered with emotional dialectics of colour / light, texture / plane, internal / external, fact / fiction. The palette consists of piquant synthetic tones revealing traces of reworked drawings and gestural mark-making, where the paint has been bled, dripped and smeared exposing his unique talent of using portraiture from the inside out.

Showing simultainiously and in our project room will be an installation by the New York artist, Elbow-toe. Elbow-toe is a Brooklyn-based artist whose work is inspired by street graffiti. He is prolific and the pieces often vary wildly in style, gathering from all sorts of influences. His pasted paper pieces demonstrate an indication of his skill as a draftsman, but his developing style of exaggerated postures and inventive distortions are his own aesthetic. This exciting installation will feature works on paper and an array of the artist's signature, mixed-media work. Please contact the gallery directly for further information.
