Maps both of enormous, distant plains and of individual nervous systems, Farah Syed's paintings are images of places, which resist being pinpointed.

Often using scientific material as a source, the paintings are informed by the incessant transformation and volatility of biological patterns: the self-organisation of cells forming tissue are seen as synonymous with individuals creating complex societies.
Sudden irregularities brought about by a minute and random event; a swarm reassembling itself after a disturbance in its path.

Intricate and layered, these paintings allow for variable readings, drawing the viewer into an enquiry about the nature of intimacy and distance, of the singular and the swarm.

Farah Syed graduated from Hochschule der Kunste, Berlin in 1997 with an MA in Painting. She lives and works in London. Her recent exhibitions include: Chambers Gallery, London; London Art Fair, Blackheath Gallery, London; and Otter Gallery, Chichester.
