This exhibition seeks to explore the notion of documentary within contemporary photographic practices and the approach that visual artists take to describe particular socio-economic conditions. The artists featured here use metaphor, play, archival material and site-specific installations to re-consider conventional documentary photography.

Their works construct alternative ways of representation which open up dialogues on present conditions and future possibilities of societies.

Nina Mangalanayagam deals with issues of race, nationality, and Diaspora, using landscape to delineate racial differentiation.

Tina Carr & Annemarie Schöne’s photographs of ex-coal mining communities in South Wales are not clichéd representations of run down villages, instead they record the dignity and cheerfulness of the people living there.

Tom Ranahan's photographs of Great Yarmouth avoid any overbearing interpretation, and simply describe the changing culture and excesses of seaside towns.

Alison Marchant uses archival photographs and oral testimonies to create site-specific installations, making visible working class life in Britain.

David Bate's photographic series 'Zone' inspired by Andrei Tarkovsky’s film 'Stalker' are symbolic descriptions of the medeival city of Tallinn in Estonia.
