Contemporary Art Projects is pleased to present an exciting exhibition of paintings and sculptures by Hugh Gilmour.

A large installation of 25 paintings repetitiously explores the human body in a manner reminiscent of 15th century anatomical studies of exposed body functions.

Other paintings use metallic paint, glitter, and resin to create a surreal, “Gustav Klimt meets Gary Glitter in a dark alley” attitude.

Gilmour possesses a refreshing balance of maturity and immaturity. He is not afraid of kitsch; he embraces budgies and exposes holiday postcards to a heightened sense of sentimentality and vulgarity. Shiny objects and yummy colours abound.

At the same time, he pays homage to the process of painting by turning the corners of his paintings into his working palette. Depending on the viewer’s sensibility, the result is either a mess or tiny sophisticated and tender shrine to the great masters.

Hugh Gilmour was educated at Grays School of Art, Aberdeen (BA (hons) 1st Class Painting) and Royal College of Art (MA Painting). Awards include the Beal Foundation Award, Fleur Cowles Award for Excellence, and the Rome Scholarship from the British School at Rome. He currently lives and works in London.
