Fosterart is pleased to host an exhibition of works produced by Rebecca Salter during her three
months as artist-in-residence at The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Bethany, Connecticut.
This is a prestigious, invitation-only programme which selects candidates exemplifying the
seriousness of purpose that characterised both Anni and Josef Albers. The intention of the
programme is to provide an opportunity to work in a concentrated way on one’s art in an idyllic
setting removed from the day-to-day world.
Rebecca used her time at the Foundation to look at Josef and Anni Albers' work and experiment
with new methods and materials. The result was over 50 drawings and paintings, which she will use
as reference points in the future.
"I went to the Foundation expecting to explore colour, since Josef Albers' work, in particular his
famous "Homage to the Square" series, focuses on perceptions of colour. Being at the Foundation
and having access to work and writings of Josef and Anni, I found myself instead drawn to the line.
From Josef's relatively unknown early drawings, almost oriental in their calligraphic economy, to his
later "Squares", I was taken by his mastery of the line.
My plans for an almost analytical exploration of his use of colour changed and I abandoned myself
to the luxury of three months drawing. The results are important to me as a visual documentary of
my time at the Foundation, but beyond that they are a powerful reminder of the importance of taking
the time to see. I hope the lasting value of this period of isolation and concentration will be reflected
in my next body of work."
Nicholas Fox Weber, Executive Director, Albers Foundation: "Rebecca Salter's stay at the
Albers Foundation fulfilled our dream for the residency program. The way this extraordinarily talented and
independent artist clearly flourished in the relative isolation of our bucolic setting was everything we might
hope for. In the tradition of both Josef and Anni Albers, Rebecca is marvelously removed from the trends of
the art world, and pursues artistic goals that are universal and timeless in their magnitude, although she is
far too modest to make such claims.
We knew, of course, upon inviting her, that she is an artist of utmost skill, rigor, and subtlety, with a very
personal poetry. In her time at the Foundation, these qualities became all the more apparent in the body of
work she produced. She was kind enough to invite us in to her studio from time to time, and the results
invigorated everyone on the small staff of our institution, for we felt and knew that there was a world-class
artist in our midst, whose work provided an unprecedented visual experience."
Both Josef and Anni Albers often made prints to underscore a particular theme using the challenges
offered by a different method of expression. In the same way, Rebecca has made a limited number
of woodblock monoprints since her return to London. They will be available for sale during the
exhibition, with 20% of the proceeds going to the Foundation. LeAnn Barber, Gallery Director.
* Rebecca Salter's residency was also supported by the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. She shows at Fosterart courtesy of
Howard Scott Gallery, New York and Hirschl Contemporary Art, London.
