Welcome to Chris Gilvan-Cartwright’s luscious and excessive paintings of an imagined reality.

Hare Sprayed Streams features painting and drawing layered with imagery appropriated from high and low art sources such as children’s book illustrations, decorative ornamentation and Victorian fairy paintings. The selected imagery inhabits either vast or intimate spaces reminiscent of John Martin, Fragonard and the German Romantics.

A game of illusion is at play where gestural and graphic forms collide with brilliantly coloured trippy passages of painterly excess, which is occasionally peppered with a hint of the Brothers Grimm.

Everything adds up to nothing and nowhere, a utopian fancy of half remembered dreams switched to fuzzy logic.

A graduate of Central St. Martins, Gilvan-Cartwright travelled to Krakow in Poland for Post Graduate studies and completed an MA in fine art at the University of Brighton in 2002.

He won the Royal Overseas League Travel Bursary in 1998 and travelled to India and Nepal, producing a large body of work, which has been widely collected. He has had four solo shows at the East West Gallery Notting Hill, been shortlisted for the John Moores Art Prize twice and exhibited at the Jerwood Drawing Prize 2004.

Gilvan-Cartwright was chosen to design the BBC PROMS logos for 1998/1999 and his work has been featured in The Times, Independent, Telegraph, Elle, Marie Claire, and on BBC Radio 4 ’Itchy Feet’.
