Kerry John Andrews’ installation consists of recordings based on interviews of a cross section of people in London who speak about three important places in their lives.
The voice is an interesting feature of a living being as it extends beyond the physical body. The voice is corporeal but not physical. We experience it spatially. If we isolate a person’s voice, our perception of the person goes from a fixed solid object in, and thus separate from, the surrounding space to him being a part of the space as far as the sound extends. Thus, in listening to Andrews’ work, we experience the speaker as a more physical presence than normal, we literally inhabit the same space as him.
This spatial relationship is overlaid with others -- a virtual one as the speaker is discussing the spaces he most identifies with, whilst in the background, we might also hear the actual noise in the space we’re inhabiting.
It is these different levels, material and virtual, foreground and background, controlled and uncontrollable, that Kerry John Andrews work sets to explore.
