New paintings by Jasper Joffe showing tattooed men with boobs and chicks with dicks in singles, pairs, and groups.
The main gallery features large paintings executed with painterly panache and brutal energy. Single figures stand naked and proud against bold clashing backgrounds. Mismatched couples create awkward spaces between each other. Groups of people have sex, an activity which distorts their bodies into the most useful forms to facilitate orgies.
These paintings were made over the last year in his studio in Dalston and the influence of this vibrant multicultural area is clear. He paints people in a variety of colours from bright pink, to pastel brown, to zinging yellow and with uncertain or mixed ethnic characteristics. Joffe gives his figures dual genders avoiding being a male painter painting yet more paintings of naked women. This doubleness is a kind of cubism, seeing round corners, beyond the man-woman binary. It is also a way of not letting the viewer get comfortable.
Joffe imagines a place where sexual and racial features have grown distanced from their traditional contexts and reached a point of exuberant excess. Skins have become part of the written-on world, like t-shirts with numbers and slogans on, or sweatshirts advertising American sports teams. Joffe's naked people are covered with jokes, advice, profanities, and nonsense, their tattoos puncturing painting's silence.
With the sense of words and bodies torn loose, Jasper Joffe finally leaves us with faith remaining in one thing: the extraordinary ecstasy of painting.
