FERREIRA PROJECTS is proud to announce Bosse Sudenburg’s debut solo exhibition in London titled Supermarket. Sudenburg’s latest body of work comments on the art production process itself and its various stages and conditions: the creative phase, the process of production and the art market. One of his major themes is to draw attention to, and question, his own artistic approach through the use of installation, painting and video.
Supermarket refers on a higher level to the turning points represented by inventions like writing, film, digitalisation and how it shifted the way we perceive the world. Along the way Sudenburg encounters certain anthropological patterns that, despite of the loss caused by the changes, are able to again redefine these new media.
Sudenburg explores the metaphysical and anthropological dimensions of the art market, which he translates into the wider theme of ‘super’ market. Through his use of quotes, settings, props, icons and video performances, he constructs a market like display, endlessly multiplying each component through a complex system of references.
In Sudenburg’s monochrome light-boxes, the viewer finds quotations commonly used on a daily basis by the public. Through the endless repetition in every day life these sayings are emptied and become meaningless fragments in conversation, filling spaces, overlapping breaks and uncomfortable situations. These quotations are true in every case not only because they are right but because they are repeated endlessly. Thus, these sayings anticipate the model of contemporary truth: truth defined by the quantity of hits on Google.
In the Video "100 Bucks in 100 Seconds" every second we get a cut; every second the camera shows a different perspective on the same action. The time passes sometimes slower, sometimes faster. The measured time corresponds to the amount of money, but the experienced time extracts itself from any measurement. Life is a quality that is immeasurable. The manic habit of making sure ones own credit worthiness is as it appears on every corner in New York is the self-synchronisation with the so called real time. This makes it possible for international finance to react with the same method on the changes in the mood all over the world around the clock.
Sudenburg work has been exhibited extensively on an international basis, both in solo and group exhibitions. He was awarded two grants to complete artist residencies in New York City where his work was shown in the 2005 Hunter College MFA show. Since then, Sudenburg’s films have been shown in numerous art fairs such as Insurrection International, Chicago (2007); Rencontres Internationales, Paris (2006); Cinema Abstracta, Rome (2006); EmergeAndSee, Berlin (2006), and the 13th Rencontres Internationales in Berlin (2007). Sudenburg is a German artist who currently lives and works in Berlin.
