Contemporary Art Projects is proud to present Alexander Adams’s debut solo London exhibition, ‘Ruins and Landscapes’. Drawing on his experiences from living in Wales and Berlin, Adams, as painter, acts as an unobtrusive mediator between the subject and the viewer. In his work Adams acknowledges Romantic landscapes settled into the present with clarity described in black, grays and white. Dense forests and ruins comprise the main subjects of his paintings.

He depicts scenes that are desolate but not necessarily melancholic: the twisted interiors of the Berlin ruins replay the structural violence previously sustained while trees kept in stasis by snow anticipate the vibrancy of Spring. Despite these potential narratives, the paintings themselves seem immutable; they possess a rhythm that owes little to time. Alexander Adams’ paintings hold your stare in the middle - distance before softly flooding your reverie. As artists return to a re-examination of representation it is the work of Alexander Adams that stands out.

Adams is an alumnus of Wrexham College of Art and Goldsmiths College, London, and writes regularly for the Jackdaw Newsletter. His letters to writer and art historian, Sue Prideaux, included in the accompanying exhibition catalogue further elucidate his artistic approach.
