This show brings together twelve artists exploring the public and private faces of intimacy and its curious, compulsive obsessions.
Roped together, two carrier-bag toting protagonists travel through the dark landscape of Sam Dargan's painting. In Laura Malacart's video a bauble spins out of control, unable to contain its own passion, while Sophie Horton's wool sculpture draws a playful, intimate space with a pulsing glow. Nurcan Ozagi and Alexander Adams explore familial intimacy and Eleanor Moreton's reflective paintings are inspired by memories of her mother. Lily Markiewicz's photographs look at spaces containing traces of a past intimacy - the domestic drifts into the uncanny.
In Debbie Booth's collaged texts sourced from the London Review of Books annotations reveal painful truths. Jost Münster's quietly considered abstract work makes a series of subtle and binding connections just as Suky Best's sequential images suggest losing and finding intimacy as one inevitable action. Gavin Maughfling's painting reconfigures an everyday bedroom scene and Nicky Hodge's video tracks a mouth on its journey to the coast.
Each artist conveys how the intimate space implies the passage of time, of a knowing based on observation, study or experience. They also suggest how familiarity might just tip over into something more disturbing.
Close at Hand is curated by Nicky Hodge and Gavin Maughfling. A text by Althea Greenan to accompany the exhibition will be available in the gallery and on the website www.commentart.com. Exhibition images and artist bios are also available on comment.
