Mimei Thompson graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2005. Her work explores the unstoppable proliferations of natural systems through luminous paint and baroque excesses of brush-marks. Dialogues are set up between meticulous construction and chaos- between control and the point of tipping beyond control. Neon meets earth; colours flip from naturalistic to the artificial, tuned to the frequency of a hyper-world. |

Mindy Lee uses a repeated expulsion of paint,fusing layers together into a monstrous hybrid. These forms lure the viewer in through delicate detail.As the surface is infected, disgust and seduction are intertwined through a revelling in squeamishness. Lee lives and works in London. Nerys Mathias' practice concentrates upon the troublesome aspects of love: desire and absence.Using photography as a tool to gather evidence the work manifests itself as square images.The draws upon a large scope of literary influence: Roland Barthes "A Lovers Discourse", the love poetry of Jacques Prévert, the plays of Samuel Beckett, and James Joyce's "Dubliners". I am trying to explore the boundary between reality and fiction of what we believe and accept.The subject matter of my work usually involves figures and organic forms with regard to the properties of bodies. The biology of animals and plants has always been a reference in my work. The apparently imaginary creatures that I created attempt to address the possibility and potential in reality, which is integrated and inseparable from the imagination.The potential of undiscovered animals, plants, or even diseases and disorders has always been confirmed by the unpredictability of life. |

Central to Dobson’s practice is the German word “Verfremdung” implying an approach to representation which instead of being a response to the real visual world and its meaning, exists on its own terms. In his paintings, object impressions made on wet layers of acrylic paint are manipulated by subsequently applying several layers of thin paint, with an allusion to pixilation.. He lives and works in London and studied at Reading University. In 1997 he won the Logos Prize; in 2002, 2004 was shortlisted for John Moore’s; and, in 1998 for the Jerwood Painting Prize.

Rosalind Davis is a mixed media painter creating complex and 3d dystopian landscapes, with a romantic and melancholy undercurrent.
The medium Davis utilises, fusing painting with collage and embroidery, is complex, creating experimental expressions in painting. Her technique adds fragility and tenderness, emphasising the disconcerting juxtaposition between aesthetics and meaning. The effect she achieves is disconcertingly touching and powerful, creating landscapes that are a visual echo of human experience. |

Inspired by artists like Frida Kahlo, Gibbs’s practice gains an autobiographical nature. Everyday objects are subverted to tell personal stories of the repetitive and mundane, yet poignant nature of everyday life and conventions. She is specifically interested in the cyclical nature of life- ‘life creating life to create life’ and the necessary condition of motherhood to keep the cycle active..

Sparkes wallpaper installations reference the history and popular culture of wall papers in England. The ‘pub wallpapers’ dedicated to a particular leitmotif- the artist’s drinking haunts in her home town of Reading, are a homage to the fabulously grotesque wallpapers that grace the walls of these establishments. The labour-intensive process of hand-painting each repeat motif, is both an obsessive and cathartic act, an attempt to exorcise the ghosts of memories that are held within each building.
