Matthew’s work has explored the public in its environment, as a body in space. The work has sought to undermine and reposition the natural order of private and public, displaying the intimate architecture of, say, the hair appointment to the critical gaze of the art audience. The work has aimed to interrupt convention, change routine and alter the predominant narratives of the everyday, by positioning CCTV cameras within the white cube and delaying the feed by three seconds. Most recently the work has utilised non-linear approaches to create results that he as author have limited control over. Embodying a suit with CCTV cameras so as to interact with the audience.
Stock utilises new-media technologies to explore, through interactivity, the ability to create multiple readings of the work directly through the active participation of the viewer. Fundamental to his art progression is the idea that the work is not hermetic but something that requires exposure to exist. This interactivity enables the work to wait for the audience to inspire it; either visually, through hearing or through motion. This is an idea that has been increasingly explored in contemporary art, notably in the works by Bruce Nauman and Dan Graham.
