Victoria Hall's work is a combination of an ethnographical and performative approach resulting in documented pieces using photographs and text. In the present series of humorous and sophisticated restaging of famous British and European paintings from the 16th through to the 20th century, careful attention is paid to lavish costumes and grand surroundings, in which Hall is always the leading lady.
She has created a body of work which is often stunning in scale and ambition, and yet has a very English sensibility about it. They are a thought-provoking reflection of the artist's interest in the role of the female figure in western portraiture and our love affair with history as costume drama. The photographic image is printed to the size of the original canvas. These works, in which the specific language, texture and accessibility of photographic reality is exploited, make reference to the modern creation and consumption of history through period drama and the heritage industry's exploitation of this genre.
An important aspect of the work looks to the role that the museum plays in the comprehension of art and its presentation of our heritage. The aim is to explore our ambiguous relationship with these images and the environment in which they are viewed by presenting a clearly contemporary recreation. This work looks to the role that the contemporary artist can take within the heritage industry of today.
