Salvatore Fiorello
Place of birth Cardiff, WalesCountry of residence United Kingdom
Salvatore Fiorello’s paintings depict depopulated urban spaces that are devoid of people but full of atmosphere. However they are anything but menacing as he uses bright colours: purples, pink, aqua and oranges. The result is a set of paintings that look like the backdros to a kitsch 1960s psychedelic film noir.
The images are made up out of a series of horizontal lines, and two shades of one colour, giving the over all effect of squinting through half open Venetian blinds.
The locations of the pictures are vague, as signs have been omitted. Consequently we see similarities between the generic buildings that make up a city with the images looking both familiar and strangely abstracted.
Our eyes are encouraged to look vertically, down the street or up at a building, but because the images are made up of horizontal lines our eyes move from right to left and up close the effect is like staring at the dots created by a cathode ray tube.
Fiorello studied at UCE, Birmingham (BA Fine Art Painting) and Royal College of Art (MA Painting). He lives and works in UK.
