Paul Butler

Place of birth Bristol
Country of residence United Kingdom

Butler’s paintings navigate the bureaucratic power hungry-chaos of urban cities teeming with business men, paper pushers, officials, snarling dogs of war and glaring neon signs. They are at once wry satirical explorations in the cool distant attitude of a social critic, and stirring painterly images. Key to his work is a convincing use of medium, making possible highly charged signification, lending the work graphic immediacy. World events in blood red gloss paint; boardrooms and court scenes peopled with lawful functionaries staged in telling monochromes; and, promulgators of capital sketched out like cartoon monsters.

He is currently professor of painting at the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham. Selected exhibitions include: 2006 One Love, Lowry, salford, 2001/2002 Arts Council Touring Exhibition.1999, Robert Sandleson Gallery, London. 1995: John Moores, Liverpool. 1994 East International, Norwich.
