Artist Statement
Working as a freelance press photographer, I had to speedily pinpoint, shoot and transform newsworthy events into illustrative images at an alarming rate.
But sometimes slowness struck and I noticed, entranced, the beauty of intriguing textures, structures and colours that were recorded, almost by accident, in the background and in the margins of the photographic images I produced.
How wonderful it would be to take these out of context and use them for my own purposes, I thought.
When, through the generosity of a sympathetic newsagent, whole bundles of identical weekend supplements came my way I was up and running.
Collage, montage, mixed media? None of these labels quite fit the process that evolved for me. Instead I chose the name “lens based painting” for the unique practice that emerged.
The first and foremost requirement became the seamless connection of those printed photographic particles I carefully cut out. Like a wave joining them into a new identity - “emotional landscapes” – formed with a life of their own.

There is seemingly no end to the possibilities waiting to be explored and I cannot wait to discover them all.
As a new development, I am currently exploring the possibility of creating limited editions that become photographic prints or light boxes. It seems a logical development as I take photographs, cut them up, realign the pieces in totally new ways and
