Maria Chevska

Country of residence United Kingdom

Maria Chevska explores and expands on the traditional boundaries of painting. Frequently, quotations drawn from the writings, for example, of Rosa Luxemburg or Franz Kafka, serve as the starting point for her three-dimensional installations, which combination elements of painting and sculpture. In these tangible words and phrases, the artist appears to be searching for an embodiment of language that engages in dialogue with made or found objects. Chevska's works examine both the influence of language on the visual world and the narrative dimension of the visual. Writing is expanded beyond its traditional function and becomes an aesthetically appealing image. Also key to Chevska's oeuvre are the themes of dislocation and exile - situations that threaten one's existence and for which the artist has found her own narrative style.

Maria Chevska is currently head of Painting at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art at the University of Oxford. She lives in London.
