Katherine Kicinski
Date of birth 12.Dec.79Place of birth United Kingdom
Country of residence United Kingdom
Fascinated by the ways time can reveal itself within spaces, Katherine Kicinski's paintings explore a mysterious territory: the continual shifting from presence to absence, the transformitive moment as future becomes past, where everything has a physical and sensory immediacy and yet seems always to allude our reasoning, close at hand yet hard to describe. The work shifts in atmosphere from the geological to the theatrical.
Structures are gradually formed, phenomena become form and object turns to ground. Narratives are unravelled and re-enacted, staged on and written into the surface of the painting. The spaces and forms she makes are punctuated by edges and voids revealing a highly personal logic that runs throughout the works on show. Collaged elements provide a rupture, a vertiginous edge where the image can turn back on itself or instead suggest solid ground, a place from which space begins and ends.
Through an overlaying of images and interventions the work transforms the painted surface into a threshold, a site where spaces converge and are displaced, it's imagery simultaneously arriving at and departing from the world.
Katherine Kicinski lives and works in London, she graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2005 and was selected for New Contemporaries 2006.
