Julie Goldsmith
Place of birth LondonCountry of residence United Kingdom
Goldsmith's sculpture and installation incorporate clay carvings, one off bronze castings and tiny collectables. The placing of the work, in an urban warehouse, an old ice house, a disused water tower and lately the crypt of a church become contemporary art folklore inspired by both the location and the artists own life and history. Her fragile, totemic, mythical creatures, with teeth and wings and special tokens, cats, unicorns and beasts explore and inhabit the space. The accompanying sound-piece and lighting conspire to create a gothic fairytale.
"My latest installation, for Still Another Place is inspired by The Crypt. I made the accosiation of Dickens and visited the nearby Foundling Museum, where i saw the heartbreaking tokens: engraved coins, hand made hearts, a tiny key and other momento given by mothers who gave their children up as a method of identification should they ever be able to collect them. I have created a piece called The Dream Of Little Nell, as she sleeps in her tiny closet, in the empty Old Curiosity Shop, alone, while her grandfather is out gambling."
Selected solo shows include Gas Lane at The Waterpoint, St Pancras and Fairy Tales at The Ice House Gallery, Holland Park. Julie's studio home is at Great Western Studios, established in 1994 in a then redundant railway warehouse in Westbourne Park. Great Western Studios provide workspace for over 140 artists making it one of the largest concentrations of creativity in London.
