Drawing with oil paint directly onto paper or gessoed canvases on the floor I am occupied by the idea of oil paint as a message medium in itself. I wish to ask carefully planned questions and create controlled triggers for the imagination. Banal objects grab my attention from magazines and newspapers. Ideas are thrown up when I mistake something familiar for something extraordinary. That is why I paint things, things I see, not that are there. I draw it, making it mine, moving it away from its original function and towards something discovered through drawing.
Drawing with paint in my practice is about the immediacy of thought to image and subsequently about the unforced elegance of line. Line is integral to my practice, I try not to allow it to finish. I enjoy symmetry, infinity, continuity -things that balance – just for that moment. The drawing, the line separates the image slowly from it’s original context, and through exploration it develops into a new creation. Fact and fiction collide as I aim to liberate existing images from their original intent and via a discussion with paint on the surface establish a new fascination with the image.
I wish to show life forms and for them to have an impatience to be looked at. Against a black or white backdrop I want them to be movie stars snapped by the camera flash, or like deep-sea creatures caught for a fleeting moment as I turn the torch on and then off again.
