Hitoko Urago

Country of residence United Kingdom

Urago works in both large scale and intimately small formats. Her canvases are tableau of abstract formations that predominantly explore an endless vocabulary of colour combinations. Working intuitively and logically, she allows both highly ordered, congruous and random arrangements of colours to take shape. Earlier paintings are structured on the character of the Japanese word ‘syibo’ or cells. These flat cell-like bodies overlap and transform each other creating a world of gentle and faded, yet flickering patterns. More recent works take on a brighter palette and are characterized by dramatic bands of colour formation.
She lives and works in London and studied at the Slade, Chelsea College and the Guildhall University.
