Ambiguous shapes, plants, strange creatures and landscapes populate Melland's canvases. Daubs, strokes and opaque lines reminiscent of cartoon imagery and graffiti appear in bold and acid hues of 1960's pop-candy colours. Playful, upbeat and quirky, her paintings are born out of an interest in exploring the sensation rather than the illusion of space as found in medieval painting and traditional Japanese picuture planes. It lends her work the effect of a curious caustic celebration, whilst retaining twentieth century abstraction's moments of elegy. The paintings reference many influences that include folk art, childrens illustration and traditional oriental landscape. Brimming with sensation and visual energy, her work is an invitation to emerse in speculation and reverie.

She studied at Chelsea, Manchester and Brighton and is now living and working in Devon.
