Gordon Cheung

Place of birth Lambeth, London
Country of residence United Kingdom

'Essentially my paintings reflect the techno sublime, where information overwhelms the individual, causing a flickering perception of realities.' (Gordon Cheung, 2004). Cheung is interested in the notion of an artificial reality, in the way that the modern world of cyberspace and new technologies has increasingly demanded that we become hard wired, altering our conception of distance, time and space. Imagery from graphics in posters and flyers, accelerated travel and billboards are all part of an intricate web of artificiality that alters our sense of reality, to form a new landscape.

To explore these ideas, Cheung makes paintings using a complex mix of acrylic gel, spray paint, stocks and shares listings from the Financial Times, computer-manipulated imagery and Chinese ink drawing. Punky images and meticulous collage make up schizophrenic landscapes of colliding dream-worlds that oscillate between the utopic and dystopic.
