GL Brierley
Country of residence United KingdomArtist statement:
"This place, if I could describe this place, portray it, I've tried, I feel no place, no place around me, there's no end to me, I don't know what it is, it isn't flesh, it doesn't end, it's like air." (Samuel Beckett, The Unnamable)
These paintings attempt to describe a temporal and topographical non-place, a frozen present. In the absence of familiar co-ordinates there is instability which, taken to extremes, ranges from the uncanny to the mock gothic. In these disorientated spaces there exists certain tensions, light/dark, stasis/process, presence/absence, inside/outside, sublime/bathos, order/chaos. Collaged into the organic texture of the paint are detailed cultural elements, digitally repeated (sometimes tiny), i.e. nostalgia, ski-fi, graffiti, textiles. Sometimes paint-accidents are sampled and made to recur like an infinity spawned by a technological malfunction.
