Fiona Lumbers

Place of birth Luton, England
Country of residence United Kingdom

Lumbers’s work examines the trajectory between youth culture and media driven glamorous MTV stereotypes. Her water colour canvases are either populated with rude-boys and girls in urban settings sporting fake designer labels or locate self-possessed youth in romantic landscapes. Although the protagonists are sourced from magazines and television images, they are not directly reminiscent of mass media glamour images. Using disjointed brush strokes, neutral backgrounds and fake labels, a more fractured and unsettling view of youth aspiration is presented.

She lives and works in London and studied at the Royal College of Art and Coventry University. In 1999 she won the Virginia King Purchase Prize.
