Errol Francis
Date of birth 26.May.56Place of birth Oracabessa, Jamaica
Country of residence United Kingdom
born in Jamaica 1956, is an artist and mental health campaigner, living in London. Through different periods of his live he was trained in architecture, social services, photography and Fine Art. He gained his MA Fine Art from Central St Martins College of Art and Design in 2004. His professional practice ranged from being a mental health carer, a mental health writer, consultant and campaigner, to running mental health charities, running a bookshop in Brixton and recently Garden Design.
Today he is one half of the joint management team of the Breaking the Circles of Fear-team at the Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health, which promotes mental health service user inclusion and positive mental health for Black mental health service users. Francis' explicitly political view of his activities and campaigns for justice has earned him respect from some sides and blacklistings from others. At several occasions he has been engaged in stand-offs with his employers as a whistleblower.
As an artist Francis' has been exhibiting across the UK. His collaborations with former asylum patients were shown in Birmingham, installations about voting processes in the Nehru Centre London, his photos and videos at the Stephen Lawrence Gallery in Greenwich.
References in his work range from contemporary racism and the history of the slave trade to the colonial plant trade. His critical questioning of the British Colonialism and its meaning for contemporary Britain have repeatedly led him to Greenwich, a place he identified as historically crucial and representative for the British identity. Recently he has been collaborating with Caspar Below in Black Park, in 2005 they launched their web site as part of a2arts Ephemeral Cities-project (DeptfordX).
