Emily Jo Sargent
Place of birth DudleyCountry of residence United Kingdom
In Sargent’s paintings, urban architecture, seaside resorts, and caravan parks are described in a reductive flattened aesthetic against cloudless blue skies. Psychological portraits, they are reminiscent of the intensely private, introspective, almost surreal world of Edward Hopper. In the ongoing painting series 100 Paintings of Coney Island, the shabby seaside resort of New York is captured in a rare moment; isolated and snow covered. The series endlessly describes this now-faded destination without ever arriving at the definitive image, challenging the transitory nature of the surroundings, freezing it in time.
She lives and works in London and studied at Goldsmiths College.
